Borouge, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (Adnoc) and Austria-based Borealis, has started up its new 540,000 tonne/year polyethylene (PE) plant at Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, a source close to the company said on Wednesday.
The company’s 800,000 tonne/year polypropylene (PP) plant is scheduled to start up in September, the source said.
“The new PE plant is currently only producing injection and blowmoulding grades. Other grades, such as film and pipe, will be introduced into the production system after a while,” said the source.
Last week, Borouge achieved commercial output at its new 1.5 m tonne/year ethane cracker at Ruwais, after which ethylene was fed into the PE unit, he said.
The company’s 800,000 tonne/year olefins conversion unit, which will convert ethylene into propylene to feed the new PP plant, has begun trial production.
The new PE and PP plants would run at lower operating rates initially and ramp up capacity in phases, the source said.
Full output is not expected to occur until the end of 2011, he said.
Borouge currently runs a 600,000 tonne/year cracker and PE facility at Ruwais.
